Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.

Video review technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors are granted the right to challenge certain rulings made by the chair umpire, echoing the practice currently in use at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move arrives only a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can request the official to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a player can request.

Case in Point

A recent case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at every one of its events.

Other Changes

Another innovation at The Championships this year involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where spectators have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
