Our Leading Album of the Year: The Artist's Lux Takes the Premier Place.

On the surface, this album might appear more like a challenging scholarly challenge rather than the latest popular music album by a musician whose last single featured a global pop star. Broken into four different parts and voiced in thirteen languages, it is a breathtaking orchestral-influenced opus investigating feminine mystique, religious ascent, and bodily change, often through the lens of different women saints. The dissolution of a love affair—a topic handled with raw openness on another major 2025 album—is launched skyward here, supported by the lush presence of a full orchestra and contributions from a Pulitzer-winning songwriter among a vast roll call of collaborators. The pure audacity alone makes the work of contemporary pop stars appear rather laughable.

Rising Above Scholarly Pretense

That Lux succeeds in avoid overly academic chin-stroking is nearly a miracle, with full credit belonging to Rosalía. Although this is not the first time album to alchemize the past with modern styles, the stakes are much greater here, with the balancing act far more precarious. The element that really elevates her fourth release, outside of its multilayered melodies, dense arrangements, and engrained drama, proves to be a core sense of fun. Much like the iconic Björk during her height, there is a wondrous sense to Rosalía's voice that pulls the listener into its whirlwind. Even when she is breaking hearts in two, the listener still desire to be alongside her for the ride.

A Signature Moment of Joy

That playful energy comes forth brightly on a stirring Italian ballad inspired by a saint. It luxuriates in a string-drenched melancholy for several minutes. Then, all the music falls silent, and we hear a gleeful giggle and a comment before a comically over-the-top orchestral crescendo crashes down with cartoonish impact. The track then segues into the wild track driven by racing orchestration, an imposing choral group, and a cameo appearance from the artist herself.

"The magic of Lux lies in you rarely quite know—nor wish to know—what you will go to next."

Nearly each song ends in a totally different place from where it began. One moment examines the fleeting trappings of celebrity with a featherlight symphony before disintegrating into digital chaos. Another, a cut echoing her previous rhythmic work begins off dark and sinister, featuring prowling vocals, before sudden traditional rhythms and a heavenly choir arrive to smooth its rough corners.

The Balance Of Experiment and Accessibility

Another crucial balancing act of Lux is straddling the line of bold innovation and broad accessibility. It is no coincidence that the album has become her first work to break into the upper reaches of key markets: at its core a suite of truly undeniable hits. One track sung primarily in English builds around a refrain that seems to collect more and more infectious hooks as it spirals skyward. This trick is repeated on a different powerful track that expands and contracts, weaving layered tunes like a complex tapestry.

  • A waltz-like number charms via its playful, Disney-adjacent flair and an anthemic chorus.
  • In its words, it aligns with pop culture honesty of other heartbreak anthems, eviscerating an ex- partner labeled an "psychological bully".
  • Throughout the album, the vocals have a painted-on edge, like a storybook figure concealing a knife: "Gold medal in acting like a scoundrel / You have won the trophy of letdown."

An Opulent Banquet for the Ears

This album is pop on a grand scale, an ambitious grasp for high artistry in an era of impending artificial sameness. It eschews solipsism for glorious elevation, creating an over-the-top spectacle that skillfully manages its inherent ridiculousness. This is a deep well of buried gems that takes time to completely mine but doesn't seem like hard work. While other big pop albums of the year seemed like feasting on meal, this record offers a lavish banquet where the characters at it, some intoxicated on holy drink, flit from conversations about historical figures, the galvanizing feeling of soul-shattering grief, and common stories about useless partners. It is a modern-day musical from music's most restlessly inventive visionary.
