2026 is Poised to Be Dubbed the Year of the Frog Game.

My key observation from the recent indie games event was a delight to watch, my main revelation was perhaps unexpected: I am declaring that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.

A surprising total of five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these leaping protagonists. Given that a band of frogs is termed an army, it feels they are staking their claim.

From Classic Icons to Modern Mania

Amphibians have been anything but new to the interactive entertainment. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a niche presence. Yet, their prevalence has markedly surged in recent times.

A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an staggering number of results. While, some of these are novelty titles, a significant portion are serious titles centered on frogs.

Charting the Croak Comeback

To understand this trend, I performed a deep dive into the recent history of frog-related gaming on Steam. My approach was admittedly subjective, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.

The results tell a compelling story: a steady increase from less than 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.

This notable escalation prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The frog's growing prominence in the public consciousness is also evident elsewhere, like the resurgence of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. Yet, the explosion in gaming seems particularly pronounced.

The Allure of Amphibian Mechanics

Frankly, this is a shift I can get behind. Frogs offer inherent design advantages for game developers.

  • Charming Creatures: They are perfectly suited to be designed as quirky characters that often become a standout feature in any game.
  • Innovative Systems: Their elastic legs and sticky tongues facilitate a myriad of innovative control schemes.

A number of the featured titles smartly employ these traits. For instance the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.

On the Cusp of a Croaking Renaissance

So, what does this mean for 2026? Given five frog games already announced before the year has even begun—and the chance for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the most significant year for amphibian gaming.

Should these games are received positively—and based on past trends, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we may indeed be entering a full-blown amphibian entertainment revival.
